The Bakersfield Californian
Kern County sheriff's deputies arrested a Glennville man Sunday night for firing a handgun at two people he believed were burglars.
Sheriff's Sgt. Walt Reed said deputies received a call Sunday evening from Maurice Steven Follansbee, 49, who reported he had confronted burglary suspects at his neighbor's residence on Rancheria Road in Glennville. Follansbee told deputies he tried to stop the two people and fired several shots at them.
Shortly after Follansbee's call, deputies received a call from Glennville residents Dalene Sarret, 39, and William Tyack, 62.
Sarret and Tyack told deputies they had been to the property at the owner's request to check on it. Reed said Tyack lives on the other side of the neighbor's house. The two told deputies they had removed a lock on the front gate and drove to the house.
As they were about to leave, they reportedly saw Follansbee emerge from behind some bushes and point a handgun at them. Both Sarret and Tyack told deputies they recognized Follansbee but fled because they feared for their lives.
Sarret and Tyack reportedly heard Follansbee fire several shots as they drove past. The passenger-side window from their car was shattered during the incident. Both fled the property unharmed and called the Sheriff's Department.
Deputies contacted Follansbee at his residence.
Follansbee told deputies he had recently been the victim of a burglary and had seen the lights and vehicle at his neighbor's home. He also said he did not recognize Tyack and Sarret, or their vehicle, when he confronted them.
Follansbee was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm and booked at the Delano Police Department jail.
In 1981, Tyack was convicted of one count of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of two unarmed gay neighbors near Glennville. Some Bakersfield residents alleged Tyack's sentence was reduced because of the victims' homosexuality.
